The last few weeks have been overwhelming for humanity as a whole. Health, wealth, education, and life have all been shaken by the spine. As people that subscribe to a metaphysical worldview, we need to realise what is happening in the world beyond physics.
The Quran speaks about God's Sunnah, His habits, and pattern. How God engages with the world. One pattern of God is his teaching humanity empathy through difficulty. God instructs humanity to give alms and fast to teach them empathy with those in need. He calls to the pilgrimage to uproot division and classism.
God also teaches us to rid ourselves of arrogance and self-centeredness through qabḍ—a Divine withholding. The Quran speaks about the arrogant man's garden being destroyed to teach him humility. It recalls the Pharaoh, who is debilitated and rendered helpless to show real power and ability.
The question then, what is God's habit in this circumstance, is begging? Knowledge of such a question produces greater peace within our beings and affords clarity in times of unease and discomfort. Noticing God's pattern is critical for the spiritual aspirant; because God Himself says, "It is God's habit that has passed from before. You will not find in God's habit any change."
It has been a while since many of us have felt the pain of others. Humanity has been forced to slow down, stop even, spend time with loved ones, reflect upon the nature of mortality, focus on what is essential, appreciate God's gifts—gifts as small as walking out in the open. We pray for those that have tragically passed and those they left behind; all the while, we thank God for His blessings and His reminders.
